Ant Thomaz is a Glasgow-based singer-songwriter and musician from southern Louisiana's Bayou region, recognized for his eclectic musical style that blends folk, soul, pop, zydeco, and rock influences. As a self-taught artist, he began composing songs at the age of twelve, cultivating a distinctive sound characterized by rich storytelling and cultural depth. His music showcases a unique fusion of influences derived from his Scottish, Irish, and Coushatta Indian heritage, with lyrics in Scottish Gaelic, Cajun French, and English.
Rooted in personal experience and inspired by his daughter Gaia, his latest single “Believe” is a song for anyone who’s been underestimated. It’s about rising above doubt, holding onto hope, and knowing that you’re just as capable as anyone else. Gaia has continually defied expectations, by embracing positivity, self-belief, and the power of persistence. Her strength and outlook became the emotional foundation of “Believe” and serve as an uplifting reminder that limitations placed on us by others don’t define who we are.
Originally written as shared meditations and short stories between father and daughter, Thomaz explains, “I witnessed her developing trust in her own resilience.” He continues, “There was no plan to make it a song as such, but then, discussing recording music at the studio with my friend Chris, I shared the words and emotions and it evolved into ‘Believe.’”
At its core, “Believe” captures the journey of making peace with the past, letting go of pain, and beginning to trust in a brighter future. The lyric “starting to believe” serves as a recurring affirmation—an emotional anchor for anyone finding their way through hardship. Vivid imagery of bright lights and vibrant nights mirrors the excitement of rediscovering joy and possibility, while the message of camaraderie and emotional support runs throughout. The result is a powerful, heartfelt anthem born from love, struggle, and an unwavering sense of hope.
Thomaz first gained recognition as a busker on the streets of Glasgow, where he garnered significant attention while forming the funk-driven band DOPESICKFLY, performing on prominent stages across Scotland and Northern England, including Belladrum and Eden festivals. The band has supported iconic acts including Roy Ayers, Kool & The Gang, The Wailers, and Shaun Ryder’s Black Grape, to name a few. Their notable track "We Are One," featuring acclaimed BAFTA award-winning actor, legendary comedian and singer Karen Dunbar, was selected as Song of the Week on BBC's Afternoon Show, BBC 6, and The Kaye Adams Programme.
In 2023, Thomaz released his debut solo EP 520 to strong reviews from outlets like The Skinny, The List, and The Scotsman. His single “Magpies” gained airplay across BBC platforms, including BBC6 Music with Tom Robinson. As a solo performer, he has supported major acts such as Happy Mondays and Sheku Kanneh-Mason, and appeared at renowned festivals including Celtic Connections, Belladrum, and the Edinburgh Fringe. He has also headlined sold-out shows at venues like the O2 Academy Edinburgh and SWG3 Glasgow.
“Believe” will be followed by a tour across Scotland, England, and Ireland during the summer and autumn, with an album launch scheduled for winter.
