Cristóvam drops "Fever" ft Boy & Bear and announces new album 'Desert of Fools'
On October 10th, Portuguese singer-songwriter Cristóvam will release his highly anticipated third studio album, Desert of Fools, via V2 Records. Following the success of his previous albums, Hopes & Dreams (2018) and Songs on a Wire (2022), Cristóvam once again showcases his masterful storytelling and warm, immersive melodies. This time, his musical journey took him to Australia, where he collaborated with producer Tim Hart (Boy & Bear) to craft ten new songs that bring a fresh dynamic to his repertoire.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Fever", a hypnotic song that feels like a half-remembered dream. The track walks the fine line between struggle and redemption, exploring the delicate balance between "chaos and hope". For this song, Cristóvam teamed up with Australian indie-folk band Boy & Bear, resulting in a unique and atmospheric sound.
The accompanying music video for "Fever" visually reflects the duality that defines the album—a fusion of the vast landscapes of the Azores and the raw beauty of Australia. Directed by Diogo Rola, the video follows Cristóvam as he wakes up in a surreal setting where reality and illusion blur together. The distance between him and Boy & Bear is symbolically represented through mysterious elements like old televisions and a dreamlike search for connection.
The inspiration for Desert of Fools stems from Cristóvam's ongoing struggle to balance his family life in the Azores with a music career that takes him across the world. The artist confides, "I think all touring musicians experience it to some degree, but living so far from the cultural centers of the world only intensifies the disconnection. When I’m not touring, I often feel like I’m in limbo, never fully in one place. That feeling of never truly being present is something I think a lot of people can relate to—when your body is physically in one place, going through the motions on autopilot, but your mind is somewhere else entirely. I often find myself thinking, what a foolish place to be. It’s a feeling that lingers even now—one that you have to learn to live with if you want a career in the performing arts but don’t want to move to a big city."
The title-track captures this constant feeling of displacement: "Out in the waves / It's a desert of fools / Where my heart is tangled and I can't move / But here in the city / I'm longing for you / Wish there was a place where no one would lose." This theme of longing and restlessness runs throughout the album, making it one of his most personal works to date.
Cristóvam first gained international recognition with "Andrà Tutto Bene", a song that became a symbol of hope during the pandemic. Since then, he has solidified his place in the European music scene, sharing stages with artists such as Stu Larsen and Tim Hart. His distinct songwriting style has earned him prestigious awards, including first place in the International Songwriting Competition and two IMPA Awards.
With Desert of Fools, Cristóvam takes another step forward in his musical evolution. This album not only introduces a refined sound but also offers a deeply personal glimpse into the heart of an artist who constantly finds himself between two worlds.
