July 29 - Dutch Mustard - the moniker of Sarah-Jayne Riedel (AKA SJ) - releases new single ‘Life’ via DM Records ahead of an August headline tour.
‘Life’ showcases a new side to Dutch Mustard’s typically hazy alt-rock in its skittish directness. Taut drums power the track, which is characterised by an infectious urgency. This leans in to the lyrical themes, which deal with the overwhelming pinch-point of a messy personal moment - as SJ explains:
“Life is the soundtrack to that heartbreak you should’ve seen coming, when everything gets so chaotic and absurd, all you want to do is tap out for a minute.”
The new single was co-written with Dean James Barratt (Alewya, Rag‘n’Bone Man) and Craigie Dodds (Gorillaz, Sugababes, Amy Winehouse), and comes with a carefully planned video - splitting the difference between gritty indie-night reality and pin-point mainstage dance choreography.
ABOUT DUTCH MUSTARD
Netherlands born, London based Dutch Mustard marries a blend of ethereal dream-pop and 90s alt-rock with timeless shoegaze touches.
The approach is firmly rooted in 2025, but the influences aren’t hidden. She falls in-line with an exciting new wave of artists seeking visceral connection with the crowd, via super energetic performances - see Wolf Alice, Gretel Hanlyn, NewDad for example - who are making a fresh take on a storied genre.
Getting tips on past releases from Bill Ryder-Jones, Dave Sitek, and Antony Genn SJ’s hungry approach to self-improvement is evidenced in the evolving nature of her music.
This dedication to extending herself saw Dutch Mustard undertake their debut US shows - on a successful run that included performing at New York’s cult showcase festival New Colossus.
2024 singles ‘Loser’ and ‘Thank You’ earned Dutch Mustard multiple spins on BBC 6 Music courtesy of indie doyen Steve Lamacq, and SJ recently sat in for an interview and session with John Kennedy on Radio X. She followed this with a London show for Kennedy’s The Season Festival.

In 2022 she released her debut EP An Interpretation of Depersonalisation, which was quickly featured by the BBC, getting airplay on Radio 1’s Future Artists with Jack Saunders and being selected by none other than rock's enduring sage Iggy Pop. This was followed by the Beauty EP in 2023, which saw similar acclaim - notably with multiple spins from Lauren Laverne on 6 Music, as well as backing from Huw Stephens, Don Letts and Amy Lamé.
Press wise The Independent, The Line of Best Fit, CLASH, DORK and Notion have supported in the UK - and perhaps most tellingly she was picked out by The Grammy Awards Site as one of ‘6 Female Fronted Acts Reviving Rock’ alongside Wet Leg, and others.
Since her debut release SJ has spent time writing and experimenting creatively, while also juggling work as an engineer at a prestigious North London studio, a creative/film space, and in film and tv. Surrounding herself with music and inspirational creatives at all times, and always pushing to learn from those around her, has made for a formidable band leader.
