Ellie Walker Announces New EP Balance: Four singles charting the chaos, courage and clarity of modern life
Launch show at The Plough, Shepreth on 12th December 2025
Cambridgeshire’s indie-folk artist Ellie Walker, released her new EP ‘Balance’ on 5th December 2025, following a year-long series of four singles that together form her most personal and stylistically confident work to date.
Known for her pure, unaffected vocals and rich acoustic arrangements, Ellie has carved out a sound that blends chamber-pop playfulness with indie-folk honesty. Drawing inspiration from Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Norah Jones, and her own years performing across the UK, Ellie’s music favours warmth over polish, and emotional vulnerability over performance. The EP follows her acclaimed 2023 debut album ‘Sink or Swim’ and 2024’s festive single ‘This Christmas Morning’, building on growing radio support from BBC Introducing, Radio X, BBC Scotland, Amazing Radio and more.
The Singles
1. ‘Balance’ – released 31st January 2025
The EP’s title track sets the tone with a jangly, upbeat tapestry of recorders, trumpets, jaunty piano riffs and stacked harmonies. ‘Balance’ captures the joy and chaos of modern family life without sentimentality, rooted in Ellie’s sharp lyrical detail (“battles picked in the early morning never seem to matter at dinnertime”). It marks Ellie’s growing self confidence as a songwriter and her embracing a playful, chamber-folk aesthetic shaped alongside her band: Mike (guitars), Max (bass), Mark (drums/percussion) and Carly (backing vocals).
2. ‘The Old Oak’ – released 15th October 2025
Shifting into more introspective territory, ‘The Old Oak’ is a haunting exploration of mental health and resilience. Written during a period of personal upheaval, the track draws on Ellie’s background as a music therapist, balancing fragility and strength through its soaring chorus of “Just hold on”. Gentle piano motifs, delicate textures and Ellie’s unmistakable vocal clarity give the song both emotional weight and quiet hope.
3. ‘Let Me Go’ – released 12th November 2025
Short, urgent and emotionally direct, ‘Let Me Go’ was born from a songwriting challenge to begin with the chorus and to respond to the final scene of the BBC’s highly acclaimed TV series, Happy Valley, a highly charged reckoning between the two main characters, Catharine and Tommy. The result is an intimate, piano-led track that moves with rhythmic drive while holding onto its rawness. The song considers forgiveness and the finality of difficult goodbyes: “I forgive you, so let me go.” Recorded at The Sick Room in rural Norfolk, it captures Ellie’s love of simple, honest production and conversational storytelling.
4. ‘One Day’ – released 3rd December 2025
The EP closes with its most vulnerable moment. Written from the perspective of Emma Morley from David Nicholls’ One Day, the song doubles as a reflection on Ellie’s own past relationships. Built around a persistent piano line and swelling harmonies, it charts the heartbreak of loving someone who cannot love you fully. Emma’s desperate plea – “Who will take me home?” – is answered by her own realisation: “You’ll fall apart again.” The final calm chord lands like a breath after emotional exhaustion.
Ellie shares: “Writing ‘One Day’ gave me the chance to speak through Emma’s voice, but also to acknowledge parts of my own past. It’s about the moment you realise love isn’t enough, and the bravery it takes to stop being someone’s secret.”
THE EP: A YEAR IN SONGS
Across its four tracks, ‘Balance’ navigates family life, mental health, forgiveness, and romantic reckoning with Ellie's trademark blend of intimacy and unfiltered sound. From rambunctious chamber-pop to quiet piano confessionals, the EP reflects the complexity of finding steadiness in a world determined to send us off course.
Balance will be available on all major digital platforms and as a physical release from 5th December 2025. To celebrate, Ellie will perform a special EP launch show at The Plough, Shepreth, on 12th December 2025.
