Newcastle-based musician ERNIE signs to Sound Recordings and shares EP lead single ‘Summer Sun’, out today (June 12th).
Arriving ahead of his stadium support slot for Sam Fender at St James’ Park, Newcastle this weekend (June 14th), ERNIE’s first new music of 2025 sees the part-time chef, full-time singer-songwriter take further influence from a blend of folksy, old-timey music of small-town America and the lo-fi indie rock and electronica music of present day. At their core, his songs are folk songs driven by brooding, heartfelt vocals and finger-picked acoustic guitar, yet his live show is so much more, with fuzzy guitars, warbly synths and glitchy drums in tow.
Having received tremendous praise across the broadsheets (The Sunday Times, The Independent) and key indie press champions (NME, The Line of Best Fit, Dork, DIY, Clash, Rough Trade, La Blogotheque) following his initial set of releases, ERNIE is certainly gaining in profile across the indie landscape, with subsequent support across the BBC 6 Music (Huw Stephens, Radcliffe & Maconie), Radio X (John Kennedy) and Apple Music (Matt Wilkinson) airwaves
Ticking off countless live shows alongside acts including English Teacher, Wunderhorse and Lanterns On The Lake in recent times, as well as debut appearances at The Great Escape Festival, Live At Leeds and Boardmasters, the indie riser is primed to head out on the road this autumn for a full-length UK tour, accompanied by further new material.
Speaking ahead of its release, ERNIE explained: “‘Summer Sun’ is about me tackling my addiction and trauma head on, ditching apathy and anxiety in exchange for a life of fun and happiness. It’s a song about growth; overcoming the hurdles of adult life and coming out the other end in a better place. This song was the first song I penned a few days after I decided to quit alcohol for good…it just sort of flowed out of me very quickly. One year on, I’ve got a whole fresh perspective on the world around me and a new lease of life. That’s what ‘Summer Sun’ is all about and it feels like the perfect song to kickstart this new chapter for ERNIE.”
