AUGUST 6 - Far Caspian announces a special ‘in  the round’ show at Leeds City Museum on November 6th.  New album Autofiction will be performed in full, and audience members will be provided with Silent Disco style headphones for the experience. This unique show will be filmed for a film to be released afterwards. Tickets on sale this Friday (August 8) at 10am.

Far Caspian is Irish musician Joel Johnston, who recorded Autofiction entirely in his Leeds, UK-based studio (his current place of residence), where he himself produced, mixed, and played every instrument heard on the LP. Its previously released singles—the hooky, tender title track, the chiming, expansive “An Outstretched Hand / Rain From Here To Kerry” and the bright, warm “First Day”—earned support from Pitchfork (Selects), Consequence (Top Songs of the Week), The Line of Best Fit, DORK, and more.

Far Caspian will also celebrate Autofiction’s release with a run of US, UK, and EU headlining tour dates this Autumn, including stops at Dublin’s The Grand Social (September 8th), London’s Scala (September 11th), Brooklyn’s Music Hall of Williamsburg (October 4th) and Los Angeles’ Echoplex (October 17th); see below for a current itinerary. Tickets are on-sale HERE.

Shortly after releasing his acclaimed 2023 LP The Last Remaining Light, Johnston set up his own recording studio, where he also produces and mixes for a number of other UK-based acts. This work with other artists, while unrelated to the new album, proved to be a vital step in the making of Autofiction. Far Caspian is performed live as a six-piece, but Johnston has spent years writing, producing, and recording a full band production for it all on his own, and that began to take a mental toll. With a mounting feeling of stress and pressure, he nearly decided to quit his own project; but after producing albums for Green Gardens and Ellur, Johnston’s spark for Far Caspian reignited. He used his new studio experience to approach the making of the album with a fresh mindset: “After producing Ellur, I was able to just say to myself: ‘I’m going to produce this Far Caspian album now. I’m presenting myself with these demos I’ve had for a while. Let me see what I can do with them as a producer, not as a songwriter.’”

With influences ranging from Broken Social Scene to the Japanese band Supercar, the instrumentation of Autofiction feels light, textured, and always energetic. The lyrics—which dive deep into mental health burdens, self-forgiveness, recovery, and gratitude for supportive, uplifting partnership—are Johnston’s most direct, diaristic and literal to date. Freeing himself from any internal judgments or inhibitions, Johnston wrote songs for the album with a simple motto: “I’m enjoying this right now and therefore it’s good enough.” The process helped him reconnect with the joy of music, the reason he started making it in the first place.
