Grace Calver shares single 'So Last Season'

“She’s hot, but I’m cool cos I listen to Weezer” - the massive hook from Grace’s new single, ‘So Last Season’, which is out everywhere now.

This is a song about dating someone who isn’t really over their ex, who just happens to still be hanging around - “She’s always sending love heart eyes every time you post a story”.

“When we first met you told me you were still friends with your ex

You split up seven months ago but you went back for …

Her Birthday”

No one needs that third person—the ex—hanging around when entering a new relationship. Especially when the temptation to return is there, as detailed in the opening lines of the song, infused with Grace Calver's usual humour.

She has been playing this song during her live sets this year to gauge the crowd’s reaction, and the dramatic pause at rhyming "ex" with "Birthday" always gets a giggle. It’s proof that audiences pick up on her subtle hint, something she’s pleased about.

Grace isn’t throwing shade at the ex—she’s hot! But why can’t he just get over her, let her go, and move on? No one wants to feel like second best in a relationship.

As a fan of Weezer, she drew inspiration from their early analogue recording sound, opting for a less polished, more grungy approach—so she figured she might as well go all in and name-drop them! And, of course, she’s confident in her music taste. She wonders if she can get Rivers Cuomo to hear this song…

The verses and chorus work in complementary ways, with the verses feeling more stripped back, led by bass, and featuring modern synths and drums. This setup makes the rockier, power-chord-filled, Weezer-esque chorus hit even harder—creating what she hopes is the perfect Grace Calver meets Weezer vibe.

Grace Calver X Weezer collab when? Her favourite part of the song is the guitar solo—simple but catchy—and played on her new Hello Kitty Stratocaster! (Anyone who follows her on social media will already know about it.)

She recorded this song with Jos Shepherd, whom she met while supporting Alfie Templeman. Shepherd, known for his role as Alfie’s live guitarist, previously worked with Grace on her 2023 single Love Me Not, and he also mixed and mastered this track.

Continuing with the Birthday reference, she leaned into the theme for the artwork, which features her with a “So Last Season” Birthday cake, mirroring the song’s merch. The artwork even includes a nod to Weezer’s Blue Album.

Grace Calver is a 21-year-old singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from the Suffolk/Essex border. She writes tongue-in-cheek indie pop-rock songs, keeping a fun, playful tone in both her music and live performances, always hoping to make people smile. She insists that her songs shouldn't be taken too seriously—because she doesn’t! They’re cringe on purpose—it’s kinda her thing.

She won the Solo Female Award in 2022 and the Breakthrough Artist Award in 2024 at the NMG Awards, which cover Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and Lincolnshire. She’s honoured to have claimed two awards so far.

After headlining her first solo gig at John Peel Centre in Stowmarket in March 2025, she received great support from the local press, including the East Anglian Daily Times. A glowing review titled "Grace Calver is pure indie brilliance" was published by Paul Miles at Suffolk Sound Radio—a moment she truly appreciates.

Over her career, she has supported artists including The Lottery Winners, Alfie Templeman, Welly, PET NEEDS, Tom A Smith, GIRLBAND!, King No-One, Apollo Junction, Low Girl, Gemma Rogers, and many more.

Lyrics:

When we first met you told me you were still friends with your ex

You split up seven months ago but you went back for…

Her Birthday

You’ve both moved on you told me, it was never meant to be

But she’s always sending love heart eyes every time you post a story

She doesn’t want you just get over yourself

She just doesn’t like you with anyone else

Well she’s hot, but I’m cool cos I listen to Weezer

And she’s got a tattoo and you still trying to please her

You seem to forget, she’s your ex for a reason

Why can’t you just see she’s so last season?

Gave her a lift home last night, didn’t know you were going out

Said it was really nothing for me to worry about

It wasn’t planned you were just in the same place at the same time

Well isn’t that amazing, seems like the stars aligned

Feeling like I’m your backup plan every time she shows up again
