High Colorful Minds release Debut EP via Birdy Tweek Recordings
Bio
High Colorful Minds originally began as the personal project of Florian Godier, a multi-instrumentalist and game designer. He was later joined by John Harding from the Bordeaux-based band Pretty Inside. The two met in 2015 and played together in Salamander Jive, a Bordeaux-based band that released an album (Raymond) in 2019 before disbanding.
Florian has a deep passion for analog machines, particularly synthesizers, and has been collecting synths and drum machines for several years. The diverse sounds of these machines, combined with John’s guitar and bass loops—often modulated with effects—along with their two voices, led to the creation of both instrumental tracks and songs.
Their influences span electronic and rock music. In electronic music, they draw inspiration from IDM artists such as Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, and Squarepusher. They also connect strongly with the French touch movement, particularly Daft Punk and Justice. On the rock side, their sound is shaped by 90s and 2000s UK indie rock, including Happy Mondays, Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, Joy Division, and New Order.
Their music is largely indie rock-inspired, but with the integration of synths, drum machines, and loopers, they explore electronic textures while creating danceable music that maintains introspective and melancholic undertones.
As avid video game fans, they enjoy composing tracks for imaginary games—like The Eternal Magic Quest, the final track of their EP. They have also chosen not to use computers or samples during their live shows, making each concert a unique experience focused on improvisation and ephemeral tracks that only those present will hear.
EP
The EP consists of three distinct tracks:
Take It All – An indie rock song with powerful, soaring choruses wrapped in swirling arpeggiators.
FFACSOI – A dance-pop track inspired by the legendary nights at Manchester’s Hacienda, driven by a solid bassline, funky guitar licks, and an angry vocal delivery.
The Eternal Magic Quest – A retro video game-inspired track with the energy of a final boss battle.
"The themes we explore are primarily related to the fear of living in a dehumanized world. Authoritarianism, physical and mental violence, hatred, and resignation in the face of what may seem unchangeable are often at the core of our lyrics. Our music allows both of us to feel connected and in solidarity with the world we love, fueling our desire to resist those who seek to destroy it. We hope that others will recognize these emotions within themselves as they listen and attend our future concerts."
