Acclaimed songwriters Jake Xerxes Fussell and James Elkington have collaborated on their first original film score for Rebuilding, the poignant new feature film written and directed by Max Walker-Silverman. Today, they share two new previews to the soundtrack with ‘Daybreakers’ and ‘Callie Rose’. The album arrives November 14, 2025, on Fat Possum Records, available on vinyl and digital formats. The film, which stars Josh O’Connor, Lily LaTorre, Meghann Fahy, Kali Reis and Amy Madigan, made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and will release in theaters in the US on November 14, 2025.
Following up new work from both artists in 2025 – Fussell released his fifth album in July, while Elkington shared a sprawling new double LP back in March – the soundtrack is a natural meeting point for the pair’s individual work, formed of textural pieces that fold beautifully into the hushed drama of the film.
Producer Dan Janvey initially recommended Fussell’s music to Walker-Silverman - who immediately saw potential. “ I could hear the cinema in it right away. His music is rooted firmly in all the folkloric traditions I love but not at all nostalgic. And that was much like the film we were making; a story in which the past is all around but firmly of the here and now. And since so much of his music has no lyrics, Jake already understood the challenge of telling a story through instrumentation alone.”
Knowing he couldn’t take on the entire project on his own while on tour, Fussell called up long-time collaborator Elkington to join him, the pair having recently finished working on Fussell’s When I’m Called LP. Ry Cooder’s Paris, Texas and Alamo Bay soundtracks feel like natural reference points – atmospheric and emotive soundscapes both on and off screen – while Jake also cites Angelo Badalamenti’s work on David Lynch’s The Straight Story as a key influence. “Not only are both The Straight Story and Paris, Texas great soundtracks, but the films themselves hold hands with Rebuilding as modern inversions of the western,” Elkington says. Like many soundtracks, Rebuilding is a somewhat sprawling affair. Formed of 17 movements, it nevertheless holds its form regardless of the context through which you hear it. The playing here is warm and detailed, able to hold attention simply as a piece of music in its own right; a worthy addition to the pair’s burgeoning work together.
