Indie riser Joshua Scarratt shares brand new track ‘Summer of ‘21’, arriving today (April 8th), ahead of his debut EP ‘Riding through the desert of my dreams’, set for release May 30th.

Heralding the lead single from his upcoming extended release, Scarratt has already shared previews ‘Can’t Get You Out of My Mind’ and ‘Hold Me’ to enthusiastic acclaim across the Apple Music (Matt Wilkinson) and Radio X (John Kennedy) airwaves, in addition to initial tastemaker support from the likes of Hero Magazine and Louder Than War. Whilst on the live front, the musician has a London headliner at The Shacklewell Arms lined up to coincide with his EP’s release this summer.

Having spent the last 11 years promoting artists, Joshua found as the years went by a greater neglect to all forms of artistic practice and succumbing to an intense love/hate relationship with his first instrument the guitar had really taken hold. The outward performance of life looked pretty full, but internally, Joshua found his mental health at an all-time low following the experiences of isolation during the pandemic years.

Life required a simpler setting or set of circumstances with an emphasis on a return to being artistic and writing music. The key component of this was sobriety, which led quickly to reconnecting to music, film and books in an intense but healthy manner.

Performing on the EP alongside Scarratt is primarily collaborator Nick Hinman (Fast Money Music), as well as musicians Gamaliel Rendle Traynor on cello (Fat Dog, Fat White Family, Crack Cloud) and Callum Brown on drums (Ulrika Spacek).

Discussing his latest release, Scarratt stated: “‘Summer of '21’ is the line drawn in the sand. I found myself at the end of 2023 feeling a strong desire to escape from the confines of my mind. My desire for change was the most genuine it had ever felt. The isolation that I had created had reached its peak and I felt a severe lack of connection; I was grappling with my thoughts and I realised I had become trapped in a cycle of solitude.

Whilst the title may suggest and prompt nostalgia, the song itself is certainly not nostalgic. It is not about a specific time, year, or season and yearning for it, but it is a rejection of that type of thinking. It is me signing off to narratives I have held onto for far too long."

Joshua Scarratt’s ‘Summer of ‘21’ is out now and available on all digital platforms.
