Lily Lane Explores Escapism and Empowerment on “Higher!”
Lily Lane isn’t just making music, she’s making a statement. Her new single, “Higher!,” is a soulful, cheeky anthem about finding calm in the chaos and rising above the noise. “Life’s loud and ‘Higher!’ is my way of turning down the volume,” Lane says. “I literally sing about needing to light up to calm down (let’s get rid of that stigma against people who smoke a joint at the end of the day instead of having a glass of wine), but I'm also talking about something bigger: letting go of the noise and choosing to rise above it.”
If her previous singles “Cry Baby” was about giving yourself permission to feel, and “Don’t Stop” explored escapism in love and lust when the world becomes too much, “Higher!” blends both themes into one moment of release. “This isn’t just an escapist weed anthem, it’s a ‘HEY, TOUCH GRASS’ moment and also a ‘hey, it’s okay if you need to smoke grass’ moment,” she adds. Serving as the final preview of her upcoming EP Domesticated (out November 28), the track captures the spirit of the project—fun, honest, and a little bit rebellious in all the right ways.
Lighthearted and self-aware, “Higher!” takes the same easy, playful attitude artists like Lizzo or Shaboozey bring to songs about alcohol and applies it to cannabis—normalizing a moment of relaxation rather than rebellion. “Like Michelle Obama said, ‘when they go low, we go high,’ but the song is a little cheekier and turns it into ‘when they go low, we sometimes need to get high to be able to go high,’” she laughs. “It’s cheeky, it’s grounded, it’s a wink at how we all cope.”
Lane’s dynamic sound and bold storytelling have made her a rising star in the sync world, landing placements with Pretty Little Liars, Netflix, HBO Max, Bravo, and numerous beauty campaigns.
