“Madra Salach establish themselves as another exhilarating addition to the burgeoning Irish experimental folk canon" So Young
Today, alternative folk six-piece Madra Salach announce their debut EP It’s a Hell of an Age and share a second single, “I Was Just A Boy.”
It follows their debut "Blue & Gold" which The Line of Best Fit, So Young, The Independent and more rushed out to praise, spins on 6 Music followed by Deb Grant.
The group took the Irish indie circuit by storm this summer and rammed their debut London show this month at The George with a word of mouth buzz that saw feverish crowd responses to yet-to-be-released songs on the EP.
Snapped up by Erin Barker from T-Time for management and having recently impressed at Left of the Dial, the band are one of the must see acts at Live At Leeds, The Great Escape: First 50 and Eurosonic. Artists and bands have been extremely enthusiastic in platforming the group with Kim Deal support slots over the summer in Ireland and future supports with Gurriers, Cliffords & Brógeal.
Madra Salach met whilst playing in different outfits on the city's indie scene and bonded over a shared love of the Irish traditional canon which led to them playing impromptu pub sessions. Taking inspiration from the growing experimental folk scene in Ireland, the group added members, instruments and electronic elements to emerge with their own compositions, which are at the same time strikingly modern and written with a voice that could have emerged at any point throughout the last century.
On the new single, bandleader Paul Banks reflects; “The song came from Adam, it was originally just the riff and I remember saying that it would work well as a brief instrumental track. We started playing around with it as a full band, and suddenly we had this 7 minute track on our hands. I centred the lyrics around my adolescence, the tumultuous nature of it. We had fun experimenting with pedals for some unique sounds on the outro, it’s a bit of a diversion from the more straightforward folk writing on our first single.
“I Was Just A Boy” is out now, with It’s a Hell of an Age EP to follow January 23.
MADRA SALACH are: Paul Banks (vocals), Adam Cullen (guitar), Jack Martin (mandolin/tin whistle/synth), Maxime Arnold (harmonium), Dara Duffy (drums), and Jack Lawlor (bass).
