Manchester’s most exciting new export, The Guest List, have unveiled their extremely powerful new single ‘Weatherman’ - out today.

A soaring blend of Radiohead-style drama and Oasis-sized anthems refracted through a modern lens, ‘Weatherman’ captures a generation’s climate anxieties in vivid detail. “Mama, my eyes, I saw the city on fire, sinking as the flames rose higher…,” sings frontman Cai Alty in a poignant word of warning - listen here.

“I wrote the song as a reminder that this is not a so-called woke issue,” says Alty. “It’s destroying homes and lives now, and will only get worse if we do not hold ourselves and our governments to account.”

This conviction - marrying stadium-ready choruses with fearless subject matter - sits at the very heart of The Guest List’s appeal. Since forming in 2021 as school friends and music students, the five-piece, Cai Alty (vocals/guitar), Tom Quigley (lead guitar), Leio Hunter (rhythm guitar), Sid Wallace (bass), & Angus Gilchrist (drums), have grown into one of the UK’s most compelling young bands.

The band have enjoyed a stellar summer playing to thousands, supporting the likes of Inhaler, Blossoms & Two Door Cinema Club, while a major festival run saw Wet Leg’s Rhian Teasdale watch their Glastonbury set.

Working with producers including James Skelly (The Coral) and Bergen’s Matias Tellez, their music so far proves their scope, with subject matters including the generational cycles of domestic violence, an exploration of men’s mental health, inspired by devastating UK suicide statistics, and Weatherman’s worrying climate issues.

It’s no surprise that BBC Radio 6 Music’s Chris Hawkins has been an early champion, and that the band’s fanbase is growing at breakneck speed. Having sold over 5,000 tickets, including three nights at London’s Camden Assembly, and preparing for a huge 1,300-capacity hometown show at New Century Hall, Manchester, the band’s upcoming November UK headline tour will no doubt cement them as one of Britain’s next essential live acts. Tickets here.

While proud of their Manchester roots, the band are keen to break out of the city’s tribal music associations. “We have been brought up listening to Manchester bands, but we don’t want to be defined by that,” says Alty. “We want to be seen as a band from Manchester, not just a Manchester band.”

As their lyrics will suggest, The Guest List are unafraid to ask big questions. With some early critical acclaim, and a rapidly swelling grassroots following that are hanging on to every lyric and subject matter, The Guest List are on the cusp of a breakthrough.
