MANTRAFOX RELEASES “4TH JULY” — A HAUNTING AMERICANA REFLECTION ON A FRACTURED DREAM
British artist Mantrafox returns with “4th July”, an evocative new single blending Americana tones with his signature retro-inspired sound. Known for moving fluidly across genres to serve each song’s emotional truth, Mantrafox continues to defy easy categorisation of genre. The result is music that feels timeless yet piercingly relevant.
4th July” is an open message to the United States. A country that once inspired awe and admiration in the writer’s youth, but now stands as a symbol of disillusionment and loss. Written from the perspective of a British-born artist who grew up idolising America’s cultural heartbeat, the track poses a stark question: “What happened to you?”
Southampton UK-based Mantrafox dropped a fourth single on 8th December 2025, with a second EP release to come in the new year.
“As a British songwriter, I feel like calling a track ‘4th July’ carries a certain irony,” says Robert (Mantrafox). “It’s a love letter written with heartbreak — the kind of message you send when you still care enough to be disappointed. I’m not waving a flag — I’m questioning one.”
Pulling no punches, “4th July” delivers hard truths through poetic restraint. Lyrically bold and musically rooted in Americana and classic songwriting, it evokes the depth and immediacy of the artists who shaped Mantrafox’s craft. Its central refrain lands like a quiet reckoning:
‘Where were you on the Fourth of July?
When they called for a shoulder to brace...’
4th July marks a further step toward Mantrafox’s forthcoming second EP, a collection that continues to explore varied genres and emotional landscapes, united by one simple principle: the song that needs to be written is the one that emerges.
MANTRAFOX BIO
Mantrafox is an artistic voyage, to create the songs he wished existed, but don’t, embodying the retro taste sensibilities of 60s and 70s music with more modern ideas together into something new.
Amidst the cacophony of competing ideas that dance within his creative psyche, the act of setting these compositions free becomes a cathartic ritual for songwriter Robert Freemantle, a release akin to exorcism.
Having endured over a lifetime shadowed by depression and anxiety, Robert champions hope for those navigating their own struggles - as a reminder that one need not brave their battles in solitude. Meditation and a growing sense of spirituality is now a major guiding force.
As his journey through music unfolds, the interplay between artist and audience becomes an integral strand in the tapestry, jointly woven together.
In a parallel avenue, Robert is also exploring life as a professional songwriter for others, now exploring a diverse spectrum of genres.
The 4th of July is a protest song, intended to go onto Mantrafox’s second EP, forthcoming.
PROJECT BRIEF
All too often, protest songs emerge from the pen of Robert Freemantle, and this is one that his mentors told him was too important a message to waste and that the world needed this more than ever. Taking that advice, Mantrafox directed his efforts into completing this track with the help of musician and producer Gudmundur Helgason.
With America, and indeed the world being the craziest it has ever been, the words to this song strike with a dark and unfortunate truth.
