Margo Price revisits her earliest days in Nashville on new single, ‘Losing Streak’: sleeping off a three-day party in the backseat of her ‘91 Ford Explorer, moving to town with a handful of half-finished songs, spending two weeks in the same clothes on the brink of a mental meltdown, lost and slipping low, wondering why she left home and came down here at all. Whirling in with an organ and a world-worn sense of defiance, this resilient country rocker offers proof that while our worst times don’t define us, they are always part of who we are. “‘Losing Streak’ tells the story of my early years coming up in Nashville,” Margo says of the track. “It is a coming of age story inspired by struggle, substances and the search for the perfect song. It was co-written with my husband and songwriting partner, Jeremy Ivey.”
‘Losing Streak’ marks the latest preview of Margo Price’s forthcoming album, Hard Headed Woman, a hell-bent collection of country music out August 29th, reconnecting Margo Price with her roots, and further redefining what it means to be a modern outlaw. Reunited with producer Matt Ross-Spang (Midwest Farmer’s Daughter, All American Made), and recorded in the historic RCA Studio A, Hard Headed Woman is the first album Price has made in Nashville, a town she has called home for more than 20 years, and vitally helped to transform, creating a lane where independent and insurgent country music can exist and thrive alongside the mainstream. Like her lauded memoir, Maybe We’ll Make It, due out on paperback September 2nd, ‘Losing Streak’ recounts her turbulent journey to the city and into scene, while the rest of Hard Headed Woman traces her battle since – from dive bars to tour buses, through parenthood and marriage, scrutiny and sacrifice in a town that prizes uniformity and the bottom line.
In recent weeks, Margo Price has released Hard Headed Woman’s freewheeling ‘Don’t Wake Me Up’ (feat. Jesse Welles), with a video paying homage to Bob Dylan’s ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues,’ and ‘Don’t Let The Bastards Get You Down,’ an underdog anthem that nods to Kris Kristofferson, Sinéad O’Connor, The Handmaid’s Tale and co-writer Rodney Crowell. She also took Newport Folk Festival by storm, playing the mainstage with special appearances from Jesse Welles and John C. Reilly, covering Bob Dylan and Dolly Parton, drumming on a showstopping rendition of ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’ with Lukas Nelson, Stephen Wilson Jr. and Joe Russo, denouncing ICE and more, in addition to sitting down with CNN and PBS’ Amanpour, to discuss Hard Headed Woman and her way of speaking up against injustices.
Having just wrapped a stint of shows with Mumford and Sons, Margo Price will bring the music of Hard Headed Woman on the road across the US this October and November for her Wild At Heart Tour. Backed by a brand new live band and armed with her newly-launched, signature Gibson J-45 guitar, the run features two dozen headline dates throughout North America, including Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and more, following appearances at Farm Aid and other festivals across the country.
