Eternally upbeat and masters of the hands-aloft chorus, Liverpool’s indie-dance pioneers, The Farm maintain their trademark energy on latest single, World Without You – OUT NOW – yet, the sadness of losing teenage heroes beneath the marching boots of time accompanies every beat. Suppressing melancholy with melody, the final single from their first album in more than 30 years, released this Friday, finds frontman and lyricist, Peter Hooton opening up about the devastating loss of the ‘immortal’ icons of his formative years.
Let The Music (Take Control) the band’s first studio album since 1994 and arrives 34 years after the release of their era-defining debut album, Spartacus, a critically and listener-applauded classic, which caused a tsunami of hype around the five-piece in 1991. The same line-up of Hooton, Roy Boulter (drums), Carl Hunter (bass), Keith Mullin (guitars), Steve Grimes (guitar/keys), which embodied the early-90’s DIY spirit with a run of influential self-releases have returned with a collection of 10, fresh tracks inspired by New York disco, politics and the passing of time.
Having reintroduced themselves to national airwaves and hit playlists in late-2023 with Feel The Love, the evident clamour for new material pushed the band to complete an album of entirely new material in the company of producer, Mike Cave (The Charlatans, Bloc Party) over the following 12 months. Revealing the album’s title and track listing at the close of 2024 with Forever And Ever, followed by high-impact 2025 singles, Moment In Time and That Feeling, the band has set a tone of new adventure and undimmed self-belief.
Opening up on the final track to be released before the whole album is handed over to fans, Hooton looks back to the deaths of David Bowie and Lou Reed to add significant lyrical weight to World Without You’s upbeat synthscape.
“I wrote these lyrics after Bowie passed away,” he says. “I was so upset when he died, I was trying to imagine a world without him because he seemed immortal when I was young. One of the lines in it ‘take me into the light’ were apparently Lou Reed’s last words, so I thought that was fitting to include them.”
Released on multiple formats, including standard and collectors-edition vinyl, CD and digital formats, Let The Music (Take Control) is The Farm’s fourth studio album, a back-catalogue that also includes 1992’s Love See No Colour. Despite the long wait for a new full-length release from the band, their presence has endured over numerous special projects, including landing the UK Christmas No.1 as the core of The Justice Collective, gathering a range of collaborators as diverse as Paul McCartney, Holly Johnson, Paloma Faith, Paul Heaton, Robbie Williams and football legend, Kenny Dalglish to release a cover of The Hollies classic, He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother.

The Farm hold a distinct place in British popular culture, exporting the North of England’s world famous dance-laced indie scene, alongside Stone Roses and Happy Mondays and showing how rooted they had become in Balearic dance culture via their appearance in the era-defining documentary A Short Film About Chilling.
Produced by Madness front man, Suggs, the release of their cover of The Monkees’ Stepping Stone in 1990 provided the momentum for the band’s rise to chart prominence in the months that followed.
Renowned campaigners for justice, not least in connection with the city of Liverpool’s search for truth and justice in connection with the 1989 Hillsborough Stadium disaster, the band formed The Justice Tonight Band with Mick Jones of The Clash in 2011, going on to support Stone Roses at their huge reunion shows.
In 2014 they teamed up with the Premier League to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the WWI Christmas Truce, raising money for the Red Cross/Shorncliffe Trust by recording a version of All Together Now with artists such as Clean Bandit, Gorgon City, Suggs, The Proclaimers, Mick Jones and Leo Sayer.
Written about the 1914 Christmas Day Armistice which saw British and German troops lay down weapons for a game of football, All Together Now stands as The Farm’s biggest hit to date, reaching No.4 on the UK Singles Chart. It has been covered on numerous occasions, remaining an enduring message of hope across generations.
