Nottingham psych-pop specialists Midnight Rodeo release debut LP ‘Chaos Era’, out today (July 11th) via FatCat Records (Sigur Rós, Animal Collective, Frightened Rabbit, The Twilight Sad).

A collective of five close friends who met on the city’s live circuit, Midnight Rodeo have already shared lead singles ‘Dixon’, ‘Daisy’ and ‘Cleanshirt’, gaining widespread acclaim from the press community (Brooklyn Vegan, Clash, DIY, Dork, Rough Trade, So Young, The Independent, Under The Radar), as well as ticking off multiple shows across the UK and Europe (with three hometown sell–outs) as fanfare continues to grow.

Showcasing their debut extended release, the group’s unique sound combines a powerful groove laden rhythm section, alongside jangly guitars, theremin-esque synths and booming organs, all held together with the ethereal, honeyed vocals of enigmatic frontwoman Maddy Chamberlain. Krauty and latin-esque grooves are juxtaposed with powerful psych-pop garage floor-fillers, with their material to date both hypnotic and chaotic in equal measure.

Mixed by Grammy Award-winning mixing engineer Claudius Mittendorfer (Sorry, Temples, Parquet Courts) and mastered by John Webber (David Bowie, Ash, Coach Party, Junodream), Midnight Rodeo’s album release will be accompanied by a full UK and European tour kicking off in September this year, preceded by several festival appearances.

Speaking ahead of their LP release, the band stated: “During 2022/23, a lot of us in the band went through some pretty big shifts in our personal lives which brought us closer - so much so that onlookers at times called us something of a cult. It was all difficult for each of us individually, but it turned us into a big, weirdo family. All the madness birthed something special in this album, and we hope that comes across; out of our chaos, ‘Chaos Era’ was created, and we hope it can be something for those who are living in their own Chaos Era can relate to.

Thematically, there’s nothing political or social to it. It’s an introspective collection of songs, joyous escapism as an act of resistance, which I suppose is our own comment on how we feel about society and culture. Incidentally, we touch on themes like fetishizing toxic work culture, ego within the music industry, and there are empowering feminist themes about reclaiming your power in songs like ‘El Medina’, but it’s really just us incidentally passing through social relevance on the way to something else. We wanted to make something timeless rather than topical.”

Midnight Rodeo’s ‘Chaos Era’ (LP) is out now via FatCat Records and available on all digital platforms.

Midnight Rodeo is Maddy Chamberlain (vocals, tambourine), Jim McBride (guitar, vocals), Harry Taylor (bass), Ferg Moran (drums), Sam Potts (keys, synths)
