Oh Doom! Return with Haunting New Single “Distant Ghosts” – out on 31st October via Socks On Records
London/Herts-based band Oh Doom! unveil their moving new single, Distant Ghosts, released October 31st through independent label Socks On Records.
Blending elements of post-rock, shoegaze, and post-hardcore, the track begins with squeals of supernatural noise merging into quiet and haunting guitars. Layered, melancholic vocals lead to a huge wall of distorted inner turmoil before the song ends mournfully.
‘Distant Ghosts is about slow break-up, trying to make things work, but finally ending with both parties grieving the loss,’ says vocalist and guitarist Phil. ‘The negative things from a previous relationship are what you cling on to as an excuse for the split, but in quiet moments, memories of the good things slip in—reminders you’ve lost something great.’
At over 9 minutes long, Distant Ghosts is the longest the band have recorded.
‘During writing we had conversations about shortening the song, but all the options took away from the feel of what we were trying to create,’ says drummer Shaun. ‘The song wanted to be this long. We were helpless against it.’
‘This isn’t a verse/chorus/verse song,’ says guitarist Jonny. ‘It’s a story.’
To promote the single, Oh Doom! had a plan. Jonny is related to The Kinks founders Ray and Dave Davies. Dave’s son works with film director John Carpenter on his film soundtracks, including the Halloween films. Jonny has never met his distant cousin, but he tried to make contact introducing Oh Doom! and seeing if he could convince John Carpenter to film a short clip on his phone saying something like, ‘I’m John Carpenter, and this Halloween, I’ll be listening to the excellent song Distant Ghosts by Oh Doom!’ Unfortunately, Jonny’s cousin and John Carpenter did not respond. ‘There’s always next time,’ says Jonny.
This is the band’s second single from their session with dark, electronic music producer Cresil.
‘We really loved working with Cresil in his little lair. It’s such a friendly, creative environment. None of us were scared to try stuff, to experiment. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work,’ says Phil. ‘The music Cresil makes is very different to ours, but he’s a fellow darkness seeker, so we share that vibe.’
‘We really needed the vocals to be great on this song,’ says Shaun. ‘It’s a real band effort with the different harmonies. And Cresil worked some real magic and made them sound great.’
Oh Doom! are working with Cresil on more songs, How To Destroy Anything and I am An Iceberg, planned as an EP release by the end of the year.
‘It suits our lives at the moment to be recording songs one or two at a time and putting them out there when they’re ready. In the back of our minds, we’re brewing a full album and what that would sound like. It’ll come,’ says Assad.
Distant Ghosts was mastered by a friend of the band, Dan Aarons.
