(10th July) Manchester-based transatlantic duo samxemma have signed to September Records (Obongjayar, Kara Jackson, For Those I Love) and today announce new EP 'Hot People Make Hot Music' - out 21st August. To mark the announcement, the duo are today sharing the EP's lead single 'GOSSIP GIRL'.
Built around serrated synths and scattershot hooks, ‘GOSSIP GIRL’ plays like a voice note you shouldn’t send, but do anyway (“You brought it up / Breakup sex and a birthday fuck / See my eyes light up”... “I wanna be messy / When shit gets too heavy / Pulled up with the Bestie.”
"GOSSIP GIRL is a song about my love of talking shit about people who’ve treated me like shit," says Emma.
"It’s a track about knowing too much, saying too much, and loving it anyway. 'GOSSIP GIRL' is a representation of girlhood in the summer. It’s about the irony of miscommunication: instead of confronting the person you should be talking to, you end up whispering about them behind their back. I wanted the song to feel innocent because, at the end of the day, I love gossip, and I love my friends. Thank you to my friend who told me about my other friend’s infidelity, and thank you to the cheaters for inspiring this song.”
A collision of glitch-heavy, speaker-rattling electronics and emotionally unfiltered pop songwriting, samxemma’s music sits somewhere between the sonic extremity of early Crystal Castles or Arca, the diaristic chaos of Tirzah and Mura Masa’s leftfield edges, and the immersive melodrama of Porter Robinson.
Hailing from Northampton (Sam) and Santa Barbara (Emma), and now based in Manchester, samxemma (pronounced: sam-times-emma) have already made notable early steps: selling out a headline show at YES Manchester, being selected as a ReBalance artist by Festival Republic, performing at The Great Escape, Beyond The Music and Kendal Calling, and earning key editorial support from Spotify (Hyperpop, Planet Rave, NMF) following the release of their self-released 2023 debut EP 'Athens'.
