May 13 - shortstraw. releases new single ‘Dot Cotton’ via Our House Online (Freak Slug, Basht, Coupedekat) - the track arrives with a self-made LoFi video.
Re-purposing an iconic grime sample and matching it with a muscular mid-aughts synth line, shortstraw. - AKA Coventry based Erin West - meets you at the chaotic intersection of grime, rave, and punk. Equally at home spitting bars behind the decks as strutting the stage in dingy pub venues, her politically savvy pop-culture soaked lyrics are delivered with the charismatic panache of Keith Flint, and dead-eyed precision of underground grime MCs.
Playing regularly with Soft Play and touring recently with Sleaford Mods, shortstraw. specialises in turning rooms of all sizes into sweaty messes with partner-in-crime Leo White. Catch them supporting Mannequin Pussy in May as well as sets at The Great Escape, Brighten The Corners, Boomtown, and End of the Road this summer to experience the melee.
On the new release, shortstraw. says:
“This song is reflecting on all things ‘uk pop culture’ as it references dot cotton, calvin harris, my ford fiesta falling apart and expressing my love for raves whilst simultaneously looking back on doing anything for a laugh and everyone finding it funny until it all goes west combined with not knowing when to say no.
The infamous and instantly recognisable rhythm & gash sample & the subtle breakbeat / jungle build tie that all together with the gritty but witty bars over the top.
I feel like I’ve always wanted to slip Dot Cotton or Pat Butcher’s name into a song and as I was writing this song the rhyme just fell into place with the context. Dot cotton was a gorgeous girl and them wrinkles sure did run deep. (lyric reference ‘you weren’t even there don’t tell ur mates that u got them, that sh*t runs deeper than the wrinkles on dot cotton’)”
