SINGLE REVIEW: The First Eloi - In Sepia
The First Eloi is a multi generation, shoegaze band from Hamburg, formed in 2022. With deep roots in Post-Punk / Noise, Veteran instrumentalists take on a modern dreamy sound with leading female vocals. Their unique name is inspired by the degenerate future society in the famous book “The Time Machine“ by H.G. Wells.
Their latest release, In Sepia, open with airy chimes drenched in a phase reverse to create a slight unease and otherworldly yet shimmering atmosphere paired with warm drifting bass line and a slow tight beat and light intimate gossamer vocals that float their way through the track. Soloing guitars soar their way through and then punch in some grit by the chorus, dropping a large wall of noise.
Block volume of distortion builds a moody aura, and confidence cuts through quiet hazy expansion captivating listeners. The vocals are centre point, how humble they seem to be are actually quite ethereal.
My overall interpretation, It’s like stepping into an old image that is developing. It’s Slowly coming to life around you, very surreal, when the chorus blossoms, that's when the image starts to take movement, putting the listener in a state of awe.
