Soft Hearted Scientists are a Cardiff based band who can loosely be described as psychedelic, in the sense that they create a technicolour sound using a huge variety of instruments and sound effects, whether guitars or vintage keyboards. The idea is to transport the listener to a better place, whether that’s on a 3-minute action packed single, or a 10-minute multi section epic.

Their influences include everything from The Beatles, Beach Boys and Kinks to The Beta Band, early Super Furry Animals, 1940s big band music and electronic music. Nothing is out of bounds. It all gets thrown into the SHS blender.

The band has in the past had great press reviews and radio play on BBC 6 music shows such as Cerys Matthews, Gideon Coe, and Stuart Maconie’s Freak Zone.

Ahead of release their new double album “The Phantom of Canton”, comes “Hello Hello”.

“Hello, Hello” is a chiming very distant cousin of the great lost Byrds single “Lady Friend” with its wall of sound take on 12 string electric guitar folk rock pop. However elements of psychedelic futuristic pop including Moog synths and sound effects thread throughout.

It reflects on the need to rise above constant negativity and cynicism and spend time doing the things we like with the people we like. Pretty obvious stuff but so easy to forget in the daily grind, and the hideous stress of modern life and daily horrors going on in the world.

“Hello, Hello, I’ll switch off my phone and talk to you

Hello, Hello, we’re real, we’re not A.I.”

As for spending time with people who matter, the choruses say

“An hour of my time spent with you is sublime

Let’s get together

Instead of venting our spleen

We are 2 Mexican beans

That jump forever

We’re dragonflies on patrol with fireflies in our souls

And peacock feathers

We’ll train the fleas

Feed the bees

Cut some keys

Clean up sleaze”.

A fancy way of saying, “Let’s meet up and put the world to rights”.
