Sura Laynes share new single ‘Summer Soul’

SUMMER SOUL is the 4th single from Sura Laynes, taken from their self-titled debut album. An acoustic guitar-driven love song with jangling guitars, beautiful harmonies and laid-back drums, with hints of influences such as The La’s, Cast and The Hollies evident throughout.

The song begins with Tommy’s yearning vocals sung over sparse acoustic guitar chords, before the band leap into life and add a myriad of colours and harmonies. Jay Marriott’s guitar chimes as he picks over the verses, before clanging chords ring out during the addictive chorus. As Tommy delivers the line “And then the summer comes and I’m on my knees again”, Bassist Paul “Pablo” Whittington chirps in with some “bababahs” so feel-good that it’s impossible not to sing along – and this is borne out by the way that crows join in with this number at Sura Laynes live shows. To underpin it all, the sparse but perfect drumming of Liam Walker provides the framework for the musical merriment that sits on top of his beats.

Band Bio:

Formed in late 2022, Sura Laynes are a 4-piece rock and roll band from Derby, UK. The band’s original songs contain strong melodies and lyrics that instantly affect.  Clean, crisp guitars and strong vocal harmonies give a nod to the bands that built them, with shades of the La’s, The Libertines and The Beatles detectable in their honest, heart on your sleeve sound.

Sura Laynes are a band who do things their own way.  For their first album they took the decision to record the entire album in analog format to 8 track cassette – a leap of faith for which they were richly rewarded.  For some artists, the pressure of recording to tape can expose frailties in their songs or the musician’s ability to perform them – not so with Sura Laynes.  The tracks for the album were recorded live with minimal overdubs, in order to capture the heart and soul of the music in a way that can sometimes be lost in a more modern studio setting.  The album was recorded at Groovefarm Analog Recording Co in Chesterfield by producer Liam Walker. Groovefarm is an entirely analog studio where legendary names such as Richard Hawley and The La’s’ Lee Mavers have recently been in session.   The philosophy of the studio is to capture an authentic and predominately live sound, where “Feel” and “Vibe” are regarded higher than the more clinical priorities of the modern music industry.  The results are a “Perfectly Imperfect” debut album, full of heart and soul.  The album was recorded in analog to 8-track cassette and mastered to quarter inch stereo tape by Liam, and digitised by highly regarded Sound Engineer Paul Blakeman.
