What People Are Saying About The Bug Club’s Very Human Features:
“Very Human Features, the duo’s fourth album, Sam Willmett and Tilly Harris embrace melody, subtlety, and maturity—without losing any of their rough-hewn charm. The guitars jangle like The Vaselines or The Wedding Present, but everything’s turned up with levels deep in the red, including the vocals, which turns the otherwise sweet melodies into something more visceral and thrilling.” “Indie Basement “Album of the Week,” BROOKLYN VEGAN
“‘Blame Me’ is an especially soulful track, full of scorching lead guitars and a tone that almost approaches melancholy. ‘Muck’ is a strange, delicate acoustic number with existential lyrics about growing old. There’s the seemingly straightforward ‘Dear Reader,’ whose two-chord verses and catchy chorus contains lyrics about “a world on fire,” while lines on ‘Jealous Boy’ manage to capture something about the paradoxical and very-human complexities of nonsensical jealousy. This is The Bug Club’s great triumph. Amid all the charm and whimsy, achingly human truths are unearthed.” FLOOD
“The Bug Club’s fourth full-length (and second on Sub Pop) swerves giddily pop-ward. The two principals, Sam Willmett and Tilly Harris, toss out the previous album’s hard-charging rock sound like last week’s recycling and settle, instead, on a cuddly twee vibe that matches very well with their fanciful lyrics.” Aquarium Drunkard
“Very Human Features..is a statement of intent from the Welsh band, a 13-track garage rock delight that is equal measures lyrically sharp and sonically playful.”
The Line of Best Fit
“...It’s tracks like ‘Jealous Boy’ and ‘Appropriate Emotions’ that set Very Human Features apart, these more subdued songs bring a different feel to the record. There is a more deliberate, heartfelt tone which is emphasised through ‘Muck (Very Human Features),’ as the band examines the ups and downs of the human condition. At times this feels like a very different take on The Bug Club’s sound yet it is no less exciting or endearing.”
4/5, NARC
“The ideas are more elaborate, their visions loftier, and the execution of it all is
stellar and infectious.” Glide
