They Had Oasis Support Them in the 1990s, Plus Music Featured in Movies Starring Mani – It’s Wintergreen
WinterGreen’s new album “Songs For The Lonely” contains a total of 11 songs ranging from classic rock to poetic acoustic with a dash of electro-indie thrown in for good measure.
The band is made up of Pete McGrath on Bass guitar / vocals, Michael Knowles on Guitar / piano / lead vocals and Grant Cuddy on Drums / percussion and vocals. Two of the tracks on the album also feature the band’s recent collaboration with Peter EJ Lee (Love to Infinity).
Mike and Pete have known each other since they were kids, first forming a band together in the mid-90’s called Grifter and Mike was also previously the frontman for indie band The Catchmen who amongst their other accolades played alongside Oasis in August 1991 (when Oasis supported them!) Pete met drummer Grant when he played in the bands Underclass and Candor and WinterGreen was first formed in 2015 when they released a couple of Soundcloud demos before launching the album ‘Gliders’ in December of that same year.
The closing track of that album “Hell and Heaven” featured in the soundtrack to the movie “The Messenger” which stars Robert Sheehan and Joely Richardson.
Formed in “towns orbiting the city of Manchester”, WinterGreen spent their first 12-months of life writing & rehearsing before venturing out to play iconic venues around the city such as Night & Day, The Castle, Gullivers and The Salford Arms.
The follow up LP from the band “Accidents & Designs” released in 2017 was recorded by the band over several months in their rehearsal space giving the overall sound and feel to the album a more punk DIY vibe.
WinterGreen describe themselves as “songwriters first & foremost” and they feed on the joint energy and creativity that comes from being in the brotherhood of the band.
They released their third LP “The Future Is A Way of Life” in January 2020, with their fourth studio album “Framed” being released in the spring of 2021. ‘Framed’ features the track “Sad Strings”, which appears in the soundtrack to the contemporary Mod movie “The Pebble And The Boy” who’s stars include Stone Roses legend Mani and Patsy Kensit.
WinterGreen’s latest album ‘Songs for The Lonely’, was recorded at Big Red studios in Macclesfield with Jake Evans (Bad Lieutenant).
Two AA-sided singles from the album were released in May / June “Did I Ever Really Know You?” along with “Concerned” and “Man on the Bench” along with a non-album track called “Everyday One Big Mistake”.
The track “Man on the Bench” which acts as the lead focus single for the album with the lyric “why’s there so many songs for the lonely” was co-written with author and ex-NME journalist David Quantick.
All songs on the album are written by WinterGreen as a neo-democratic triple-equality musical collective with the tracks “Hang on to Your Love” and “Decay” being written in collaboration with the producer Peter EJ Lee, with the track “Man on the Bench” being written with the writer, author, and ex-NME journalist David Quantick and which is also the song that gave the album its title.
The band have said of the album:- “All our songs are about things that may or may not have happened……….”
