Liverpool-based lo-fi, slo-rock artist todd modern returns with TV, pairing distorted soundscapes with quiet observations about technology, isolation, and the need for real connection.
The track’s influences range from the sharp, contemporary edge of Sorry, Pavement and My Bloody Valentine to lo-fi trailblazers like Sebadoh, Sparklehorse and The Velvet Underground. It’s a sonic blend of slacker rock and shoegaze, wrapped around a cool core of observational sincerity. Guitars buzz, drums crash, but the song resolves in a single, human moment: “who would’ve thought I needed someone just to watch TV with.”
Like his emergent, previous releases, TV carries the emotional undertone of sonder, an awareness of others’ unseen lives in a city of strangers. It’s personal yet expansive, laced with subtle humour and aching relatability.
Recorded with Chris Taylor at Kempston Street Studios, the single builds from a simple idea, that “people move slow and cars moving faster on their own”, into something even more expansive: a commentary on modern life moving too fast for the people living it.
Originally from coastal Cumbria and now based in Liverpool, todd continues to shape his sound around raw textures, cut-and-paste visual energy, and a deep connection to DIY culture.
