Tuxis Giant share tender new single "Huey" + interactive music video | Album "You Won't Remember This" out 15th August via Worry Bead Records
Tuxis Giant share their new single “Huey,” a quiet anthem of resilience and tenderness, taken from their forthcoming album You Won’t Remember This, out 15th August via Worry Bead Records. Alongside the track, the band unveils an interactive music video crafted by bassist Fenn Macon (they/them, pictured), inviting listeners into the glowing hum of a familiar karaoke bar, a place where vulnerability becomes a kind of power.
“Huey” finds beauty in the ordinary: waiting for a text on the bus, ordering a pair of ‘Gansetts, crying mid-chorus during Huey Lewis’s “Stuck With You”. “Karaoke at our favourite bar / I wanna sing away my cares”, sings Matt O’Connor (they/them), their voice wrapped in gentle guitars and the kind of emotional clarity that makes the personal feel communal.
“One of the first songs we wrote for this album”, O’Connor says. “When the day-to-day wears you down, it's the small, simple joys that save you - Narragansett beers at your favourite bar, singing Huey Lewis songs. Crying at karaoke is a little sad, a little funny. But it’s that kind of vulnerability that gives us our humanity.”
The interactive video, directed and coded by Macon in Three.js, channels that same dissonance - the warmth of intimacy set against the surreal blur of memory and grief. Part game, part film, the video recreates an Allston bar and city street in wireframe, inviting the viewer into a stylised, half-remembered version of a real place.
Macon shares: “I’ve loved this song since Matt first brought it to the band. There’s something so beautiful about wanting to share a moment of vulnerability with another person, and I find singing karaoke to be incredibly vulnerable. The juxtaposition of crying while singing a Huey Lewis song is perfect, and I wanted the video to carry the feeling of incongruity that comes with the song. The familiarity of the bar and the Allston street also carries the possibility of being surrounded by hospitals and graveyards, reminding us that the whole thing is precarious. Even in comfort, things could fall apart at basically any second; a phone call from a loved one going through a difficult time or someone from a past life walking into the room could throw your whole night off course.
The visual feat achieved in the song's music video wasn't a solo project of Macon, but instead a collective effort from a community of seasoned web developers, or "web band" that Macon is a part of: Allston Web Services. The tight-knit community aims to help small organisations get the most out of their online presence and provides services to create unique digital ways for artists to present their vision, such as the video for "Huey". You can find out more about Allston Web Services on their website here.
Macon further shares the artistic approach to web development: For the video I went back to a previous art practice, programming immersive and audio-reactive environments in Three.js. I love the effect of using wireframe objects to both represent a familiar world and a facsimile of the real thing. The dissonance between the old-school computer graphics and the warmth and natural tenor of the song feels right to me. Also, I got to recreate the Route 66 MBTA bus, which was a great personal accomplishment.”
“Huey” follows earlier singles “Last Laugh” and “Silver Cup,” the latter of which explored O’Connor’s early experiences with gender and transformation. With You Won’t Remember This, Tuxis Giant offer a collection of songs rooted in small-scale honesty, transformed by their emotional reach. “We can get a handle on / Anything they put us through,” O’Connor sings on “Huey.” The world may be crumbling a little, but still, there's time to kiss in the corner booth.
