Isle of Wight riser ugly ozo announces debut EP ‘stargirl’ (pre-order here), set for release October 24th via REX RECS, and shares brand new single ‘madonna’, out now.
The anxious brainchild of artist Jessica Baker, ugly ozo has already captured the imagination of the press landscape, with key indie champions DIY Magazine, The Line Of Best Fit, Clash, Rough Trade and Under The Radar all giving their seal of approval following the arrival of lead single ‘onto a winner’ this summer. Coupled with BBC 6 Music (Nathan Shepherd, Chris Hawkins), Radio x (John Kennedy) and KEXP (Cheryl Waters) airplay, the newcomer is certainly making quite the introduction and now seems primed to build on early festival appearances at the likes of The Great Escape, Isle of Wight, Wanderlust and Outer Town.
Partnered with REX RECS, an all-new label based out of London’s REX Studios (a space that has played host to artists such as Caroline Polachek, Confidence Man, Grian Chatten and Sky Ferreira), ugly ozo’s contagious musicality and esteemed producer Macks Faulkron’s’ chaotic enthusiasm can be showcased throughout the songwriter’s newest offering, and arrives ahead of supports alongside Bodega and Night Swimming in the weeks to come - with a more extensive live plot to be announced very soon.
Detailing her latest effort, ugly ozo revealed: “madonna’ is written from the perspective of an older sister looking out for her younger sibling, andis both deeply personal and widely resonant. It’s a grunge-soaked ode to sisterhood, vulnerability, and the bittersweet feeling of watching someone you love grow into themselves, with an overbearing sense of aching protectiveness.
