Acclaimed organist Anna Lapwood continues to explore new soundworlds with her instrument in her stunning new single ‘Flight’. ‘Flight’ is to be unveiled this Friday (May 2nd) and is the fourth single from Lapwood’s forthcoming album Firedove, arriving May 30th via Sony Classical.
From the catalogue of Oscar-winning British composer Rachel Portman and featuring the extraordinarily talented saxophonist Jess Gillam, ‘Flight’ captures the freedom and beauty of movement, brought to life through the interplay between saxophone and organ. Anna and Jess first played ‘Flight’ together at the venue in an empty auditorium at the Royal Albert Hall in the dead of night. Associate Artists of the venue, Jess had just performed a show and Anna was rehearsing overnight, and they fell in love with the piece. Rachel Portman originally wrote the composition for violin and piano, but this new arrangement elevates the sense of flight in a fresh and imaginative way. Listen to ‘Flight’ HERE.
“I’m very grateful to her for allowing us to create this version. We were imagining that the saxophone represented a bird soaring through and above the clouds, while the organ represents the clouds and the wind, gently carrying the bird on its journey”, Anna said of the track. “Jess is a great friend, and I’ve admired her sound and ethos for a long time. Getting to finally play alongside her and experiment with how that sound can mix with the organ felt like such a special moment.”
Anna will also bring her captivating live performances to the Royal Albert Hall for a pair of special dates this summer. A second home to the artist, she’ll headline the venue for the first time on Thursday May 15th performing new compositions from Max Richter and Kristina Arakelyan. She then returns for a very special all night showcase, ‘From Dark Till Dawn’, curated and hosted by Anna for the Proms on August 8th. A unique musical journey extending from the nocturnal hours to beyond the dawn chorus, the concert will feature solo organ performances from Anna with more special guests to be announced. Anna has also announced a run of winter UK shows through December. Further information HERE.

Anna recorded her forthcoming new album Firedove through the night at Nidaros Cathedral, a spectacular Gothic masterpiece founded in the 11th century in Trondheim, Norway. “I wanted to create an album where the listener doesn’t quite know where it’s going to go next,” Lapwood says. “There are lots of little easter eggs in there that you wouldn’t expect – even the first appearance of the choir – and a through-line of flight and spreading wings, because this does feel as though I’ve found what I want to say as an artist. I’m very proud of it.”
Firedove effortlessly demonstrates Anna’s open-minded approach to music, one where a Vierne scherzo can sit alongside a rendition of Robbie Williams 'Angels, and Maurice Duruflé’s ‘Prelude and Fugue’ with Bob Dylan’s ‘Make You Feel My Love’.
The repertoire choices on her album clearly indicate that it is Anna’s most personal record to date. She is no stranger to blending classical music with pop having performed with RAYE, Florence & The Machine & Aurora, even finding time to give Tom Cruise an impromptu organ lesson during a late-night rehearsal at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
