Cameron Saul’s Bahia is reimagined by global folk icon Fink, who not only produces the original track, but delivers an epic remix with him re-singing the chorus of the song.
Stripped back and raw, the Fink remix drives emotive nuance and is more focused on the instrumental elements to deliver sensual nostalgia; always open to interpretation. The strings stand out on this track from the start – carrying feelings of longing, yearning and melancholy, cutting through this haunting but hopeful dream-like state that Fink builds. The texture from reverb layers and delay effects only adds to this mesmerising almost trance-like atmosphere. The soulful piano sounds and deft drumbeats provide a foundation, allowing this remix to keep growing and building. On the rework of his second single, Saul says Fink is so versatile as an artist and producer, with so much depth and so many tools, ideas and references that he draws on. He loves the space and melancholy that Fink builds into this dubbed out remix of Bahia, instinctively taking the track into a deeply emotive and beautifully haunting place.
Following on from his beautiful debut single Dance Alone, Bahia is a free-flowing track, written on a solo mission to the tropical island of Boipeba in the Afro-Brazilian region of Bahia in the Northeast of Brazil. Bahia opens with ethereal drums and is followed by sensual guitar picking evoking both afrobeat and bossanova textures as Cameron Saul transports us into this faraway hidden paradise.
One of mother nature’s chosen artists, Cameron’s music is rich with a cultured and considered understanding of our world, both its vast and vibrant landscapes and its many peoples and traditions; born from a life lived between diverse cultures ranging from the Amazon rainforest to East Africa and the Himalayas.
Between dancing strings, airy guitar licks and tribal drums the instrumentation of Bahia reflects the quiet invitation of this song for us to create space to celebrate life and connect to our own human nature as inherently wild creatures at all costs. Cameron Saul’s toneful voice is captivating on this track, weaving in and out of the production creating something magical. Bahia is not a track that rushes. It takes its time; simultaneously building and unravelling into something profound – reflecting the message being portrayed through Saul's lyrics.
As an artist Saul is bringing something brand new to the table. Blending his folk roots with contemporary production and global textures, Cameron brings a fresh, reflective voice to the forefront, resonating deeply with audiences seeking music with meaning, depth and connection. Saul's layered vocals paired with his powerful, insightful lyricism hit differently. Speaking about the track Cameron says Bahia is about joy and transcendence. It’s about stepping into the unknown and meeting life along the way in doing so. It’s about honouring life through celebration and it’s about adventure. It’s also about the special places that move us and resonate with the deepest fibres of our being. Bahia represents that for him.
Not only is the song a standout sonically but the title unlocks the story of something far deeper according to Saul. Bahia is the name of a region in Brazil that represents so much to the people of this vast country and the generations of Black ‘quilombola’ communities that have gone on to make Brazil their home since the time of slavery which changed the cultural landscape and diaspora of Brazil and was abolished in 1888. Bahia itself is one of the largest states in Brazil with a staggeringly beautiful tropical coastline and epic mountain-scapes and canyons. It is a rich and vivid melting pot of culture and tradition musically and artistically because Bahia is the heartland of Afro Brazilian culture with Salvador having been one of the main slave ports in Brazil – and in the entire Atlantic world – for over 300 years. Salvador received more enslaved Africans than almost any other city in the Americas with estimates suggesting over 1 million Africans having entered Brazil through Bahia during the slave trade. Salvador still has the highest percentage of Afro-descendants of any Brazilian city. It’s somewhere that experienced the unbridled horrors of the transatlantic slave trade and therefore carries pain and resilience beyond belief but also the beauty and richness of African culture and tradition, which was concealed during times of slavery but kept very much alive through music and traditions such as Candomblé and Ubanda. Today Salvador represents transformation, coupled with remembrance and respect for all that happened there.
Produced by acclaimed folk artist Fink, Bahia weaves poetic lyricism with a message of radical self-exploration, setting the tone for Cameron’s forthcoming debut album, Simeo, a 12-track insightful interpretation of living with love, presence, and intention in a rapidly shifting world. Lush, resonant instrumentation lures the listener into an upbeat and captivating universe, one equal part mystical and a celebration of the real and the natural.
