Indie riser Joshua Scarratt releases debut EP ‘Riding through the desert of my dreams’, out now.
A raw, emotionally charged and deeply personal collection of songs exploring themes ranging from fear and heartbreak, to insecurity and the ever-present hum of digital disconnection, Scarratt crafts a sonic world that feels both deeply intimate and universally resonant.
Across four tracks - ‘Can’t Get You Out of My Mind’, ’Summer of '21’, ‘Hide Away’ and ‘Hold Me’ - Scarratt channels his inner turmoil into lush, melancholic soundscapes that blend indie-rock with cinematic intimacy, each one peeling back layers of vulnerability. The result is an EP that feels both timely and timeless.
The record marks not just a creative milestone, but a personal one. In January 2024, Scarratt made the decision to get sober — a turning point he credits with reigniting his passion for creativity, music, and giving him the clarity to return to songwriting.
"I wouldn't have made this EP without getting sober first," says Scarratt. "It brought me back to myself, to music in a way I had neglected for so long, and ultimately feeling again.”. “I’m overtly aware that may not sound sexy, or rock n’ roll, but I can’t help feel we’ve arrived at a point culturally where we should be challenging a lot of the stereotypes which music is so heavily built on and which are romanticised. We’ve got enough years behind us now to look at all that and go “Really, is that what we are aspiring to still?””.
Speaking more on his debut EP, Scarratt says: ”These songs are me processing everything I tried not to face for years. The EP is really just me trying to make sense of the noise that’s been in my head for over a decade," says Scarratt. "It’s about the things we don't always say out loud — the fears we carry, the way we replay conversations and events, all whilst not knowingly aching in desire and for connection."
With lyrical honesty, ‘Riding through the desert of my dreams’ is a debut that introduces Joshua Scarratt not just as a musician, but as a storyteller unafraid of emotional honesty.
With a London headliner at The Shacklewell Arms lined up to coincide with his EP release, the musician has already attracted enthusiastic acclaim across the Apple Music (Matt Wilkinson), Radio X (John Kennedy) and Absolute Radio (Danielle Perry) airwaves, in addition to initial tastemaker support from the likes of Hero Magazine and Louder Than War. Whilst performing on the EP alongside Scarratt is primarily collaborator Nick Hinman (Fast Money Music), as well as musicians Daniel Vildósola (CMAT), Gamaliel Rendle Traynor on cello (Fat Dog, Fat White Family, Crack Cloud) and Callum Brown on drums (Ulrika Spacek).
