Spanish-born singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Luan Luan broke the silence after their last release, ‘‘Yellow’’, in 2020. ‘‘Nonsense’’ is solid and energetic and raises many questions by confronting the blindness of being in a toxic relationship. Despite the painful origin of the meaning and message of the song, ‘‘Nonsense’’ sounds bright, bouncy, and powerful, serving practically as a positive anthem for Luan when they wrote it.
Originally written by Luan between leaving their hometown of Madrid and moving to Brighton at 18, while being in a tumultuous relationship, a lot was happening at that precise moment. It is one of their earliest songs in their catalogue, and it took its final shape after recording it in 2024 with the full band, and in which, also, for the first time, you can hear Luan’s saxophone, the latest addition to their signature sound.
Luan Luan’s devotion to music goes back to their early years of life. They experienced a childhood surrounded by constant auditory exposure to records of all types: rock, pop, soul, R&B, blues, indie, funk, flamenco, bossa nova, reggae, bolero, samba, and many more, thanks to their music-loving parents, despite not being musicians themselves.
Right before entering their teenage years, Luan started singing, writing poetry, and playing guitar, usually reflecting their lived experiences through emotions, synaesthesia and abundant metaphors in their lyrics until today.
‘’Nonsense’’ dives straight into the story of meeting a person for the first time and instantly getting obsessed with an illusory idea of love between both of them ‘’It was a winter evening when I saw your face / Changing through all the seasons, I couldn’t pretend’’. The questioning chorus, ‘’Are you gonna sing that song? Be that wrong? Are you gonna let it through the night?’’ encapsulates their frustration and fear of this person’s constant, daily violent language and behaviour towards them.
As the song progresses, it takes us to an instrumental part where the lead guitar and saxophone meet, followed by the bridge, where Luan’s lyrics finally expose the reality of their lack of genuine love ‘’They’re fading away all these feelings, don’t you see it?’’
‘‘Nonsense’’ is the first track out of 4 of Luan Luan’s debut EP, recorded in Brighton (UK), mixed and mastered by Paul Winstanley, and planned to be released at the end of 2025.
