New music from HawaiiWorms
Pete Collins of Flange Circus debuts his HawaiiWorms project with new 80s-influenced single Mirrors
Pete Collins, who is known for his work with acclaimed experimental hauntronica/darkwave outfit Flange Circus, heads to 80s post-punk and leftfield synthpop territory on HawaiiWorms’ debut single.
HawaiiWorms draws inspiration from the ethereal melancholy of Piano Magic and The Montgolfier Brothers, the post-punk grooves of New Order, and the lush, cinematic soundscapes of The Blue Nile.
With Mirrors, Pete weaves a sonic tapestry that is intimate lyrically and expansive sonically, balancing mood and melody while the synths and production are intentionally evocative of early 80s electronic pop pioneers like New Order, Simple Minds, and OMD.
Its focus is on atmospheric textures, heartfelt melodies, and introspective lyrics. With this lead single and his upcoming Kiosk 67 EP, HawaiiWorms explores themes of memory, isolation, and the beauty found in transitory experiences.
Says Pete, “I'm really excited about letting Mirrors loose and hearing what people think! While it's certainly different from my work with Flange Circus, and this single in particular takes stronger influences from classic electronic acts like New Order and OMD and from Simple Minds Empires and Dance album.”
He continues, “Mirrors wasn’t the first HawaiiWorms song I started, but it was the first one I’d written where I hadn’t started a song intending it to be for Flange Circus. It came together really quickly after I realised I wanted something that would make at least one person dance when I play live.”
“After being part of a mainly instrumental band for so long, it was a thrill and a challenge to be able to write lyrics and release something with vocals. The lyrics might be slightly more abstract on this song than others I’ve got coming in the future, but it’s a song with a pulse I hope gets people moving. And they can listen to the instrumental if they get sick of my singing!”
With an EP scheduled for a September release and live dates on the horizon, the last few months of 2025 are shaping up to be a busy time for HawaiiWorms.
Mirrors is set for release on the 25th of July via Todmorden-based label AnalogueTrash in digital formats to stream and download.
