Ollie Cook - alongside his band lovingly known as The Hogwash - signs to Hand In Hive (Divorce, TV Priest, Wyldest) and shares brand new single ‘Home Video’ (video here), out today (November 4th).
Newly-signed to the cult London tastemaker label, Ollie Cook performs live with The Hogwash and describes his music as “Brumicana Dad Rock”, having slowly adopted a slacker ethos. Following on from sets at a number of UK festivals this past summer, including Hand In Hive’s showcase as part of Brighton’s The Great Escape Festival, ‘Home Video’ sticks to his DIY roots, recorded in self-made studios and free-to-use recording booths around the 20-year-old songwriter's university campus.
Witty yet reflective lyrical work - fast becoming a Cook trademark - sits atop crunching guitar lines and a driving rhythm section, while a front-a-centre solo adds 90s rock tones to the infectious new outing. The accompanying video too leans into this aesthetic, while welcoming the viewer into the world of Ollie Cook, inspired by, and set to intrigue fans of Pavement, MJ Lenderman, Wilco, Lucinda Williams and Sparklehorse.
With a number of live shows and more music to come early next year, ‘Home Video’ is a signal of intent from the talented newcomer who is set to effortlessly endear himself to the burgeoning alt-country and slacker-hued indie scene.
Speaking ahead of his single release, Cook explained: “‘Home Video’ is about old memories, old bands and what not to feel or do as time passes us by. It's somewhat of a stepping off point for the attached, pushing ourselves into the future, unforgivably, whilst the people who love us face a harsh reality of our absence which isn't actually absence at all.”
