SINGLE REVIEW: Smoke Break - Blinding

Smoke Break is a dynamic three-piece post-punk band hailing from New York City. Their sound fuses modern post-punk energy with heartfelt songwriting and a deep respect for the genre’s roots. Known for their raw, danceable rock edge, Smoke Break transforms every show into a raucous, high-energy party for the audience.

The recent release Blinding bursts with an upbeat, bright energy. Warm bass lines, tight and clicky drum rhythms, and bright guitars create rich textures and showcase impressive solo work. I especially love how the bass mirrors some of the guitar riffs, adding its own personality and making it feel like so much more than “just bass.”

Those little riffs and musical ideas that reappear after the chorus do a great job of hooking the listener back in, giving the track a memorable, catchy quality. There’s a strong sense of nostalgia running through the song, but it’s laced with a darker edge—a sprinkle of doom that feels rooted in growing up and seeing the world’s flaws.

Lyrically, the track is both raw and relatable, almost like a running list of the everyday frustrations we all face: issues with plumbing, landlords, running a bar tab beyond your means. I love that it doesn’t shy away from the heaviness of life, the sense of “oh jeez, what’s going wrong next?”—making it feel honest, grounded, and human.

Blinding strikes a balance between energetic, danceable grooves and candid, reflective lyrics that many listeners can see themselves in. It’s this mix of catchy hooks, thoughtful musicianship, and raw honesty that makes the track so compelling and keeps it lingering in your head long after it ends. In a scene where it’s easy to sound polished but forgettable, Blinding feels refreshingly real and deeply memorable.

Kempsey

Hi, I'm Kempsey, I'm 24 years old. I studied photography in college however, I then studied a further 2 years in college for Music and went to Uni for Music performance and my final year was adjusted after COVID to complete a Creative Industries Degree. Doot doot 🎉 Graduate 🎉 Met some important people during my studying so I got a little industry insight.

I'm now a coffee barista by day ☕ and on the odd night I'm visiting some local gigs and venues.

I'm always listening to music everywhere I go, I'm sure we can all agree it's a life line. ☺️ I'm heavily Into metalcore, grunge, pop-punk, some indie, my taste also varies.

Slowly saving up the cash for some better gear to get out there and shoot.

Got my Ticket for Download this year (2023) which is super exciting ! ✨
