SINGLE REVIEW: The Welcoming, Sparalimb, Acklen Walker - Rendered Useless Remade
Rendered Useless Remade is a reimagining of the UK metal artist Rick Whitehead (Sparralimb)'s track, Rendered Useless. With this song, The Welcoming has answered the question of what they would sound like if they tuned their guitars really low and were joined by a rapper. (Acklen Walker)
This Genre-defying collaborative single is devastating as it is severely impressive. Upbeat rhythms, soaring guitars and melodies.
With rollercoaster of dips and troughs I adore the quieter moments that highlight the bass-centred with guitars delicately dancing in the verses to give the limelight.
I’m not a big rap fan but I adore the vocals. There's power and conviction behind the delivery. It's easy to follow and the emphasis on the latter of the phrasing drives it clean. No need to over complicate as the music compensates for that.
It’s a conversation about mental health. It hits harder I believe, in this format rather than letting the clean vocals handle all aspects. It has a masculine edge which I see as a good tool especially for men’s mental health - to be heard and have an outlet- Is the goal. Not only touching on bigger problems but issues that are dealt with every day such as dissociation and conflicting head and heart.
The fronted clean vocals are rich and operatic, it creates a smooth transition between the verses and choruses. “Hey, Tell this ship to stay….” is very controlled and reaching to heights screaming vocals create a sense of danger and urgency, very impressive and controlled screams, in the right areas. Chefs kiss. “I’ve been rendered useless” reaching a final apex by the final chorus, gives the listener chills.
