Songs on Repeat: April 2025

A House - Endless Art & More Endless Art (1992)

Love these spoken word tracks, the first listing off dead male artists across all mediums and the second, following backlash for the first version, naming female artists who have passed. Starting with a poignant Oscar Wilde quote, “All art is quite useless,” the chorus proclaims “All dead, yet still alive. In endless times in endless art.” I’m not usually big on spoken word songs but these really impacted me from the first listen. There’s also a newer version of the track on YouTube updated to include artists who have passed in more recent years.

Maximo Park - Apply Some Pressure (2005)

This is a band I overlooked back in their heyday, no idea why. I decided to finally give them a try a few weeks back, they’re just a perfect example of early 2000s indie. This track is full of hooks, riffs and a killer chorus, love it!

Butler, Blake & Grant - The 90s (2025)

A Bernard Butler (Suede), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub) and James Grant (Love and Money) collaboration was always going to be a lush, harmony filled delight. This song features stunning acoustic guitars, gravelly vocals and a joyful reminiscence of the 90s, the glory days for all these artists. Cute handclaps, stunning slide guitars and an understated but impactful guitar solo. It’s amazing, as is the whole album.

Those Damn Crows - Dreaming (2025)

Those Damn Crows might not be here to reinvent any musical wheels; they just produce good, honest arena rock that hits hard. Dreaming is a cinematic soundscape with warm vocals that lean into the fuzz of grunge and the power of rock. Epic instrumentation, lyrics that resonate with the passage of time and how youthful innocence makes way for the cynicism of age.

Kid Bookie - Scars (2024)

Kid Bookie is one hell of a talent! Merging hip-hop with rock and metal, he can rap, sing and snarl, moving between styles flawlessly. Scars transcends musical boundaries, going from hip-hop to dreamy psychedelics to classic rock and back. It’s pent up with frustration, the craving for peace of mind, away from social media, money worries and all the things in modern life that serve to bring you to your knees. There’s a certain unnerving presence to Kid Bookie, like a dark force lurking, reaching into your darkest thoughts.

Storm Seeker - Homeward Bound (2025)

Epic, catchy German folk metal. Raw, rough vocals reign atop pummeling drums, power metal guitars and the most fascinating instrument I’ve come across, the hurdy-gurdy, with almost bagpipe like notes. It’s piratey, fantastical, hooky and really bloody good! Check it out, even if the idea of German folk metal puts you off, I’m pretty sure you’ll love it!

Oasis - Talk Tonight (1995)

One of my favourite Oasis b-sides, inspired by Noel's near-breakup with the band in 1994. After a bad show in Los Angeles, he flew to San Francisco and stayed with a woman he had befriended, who helped him cope with his distress. It’s a simple acoustic track. I’m not always as keen on Noel led Oasis tracks but Talk Tonight is an incredible vocal display, you can really feel the emotions in his voice, the near shaky uncertainty.
