APRIL 23 - Manchester business-chic duo Super Market reveal details of their debut product collection the Shopping List EP - out May 2nd via cult label Heist or Hit. They host an Office Party in Manchester on May 1st to celebrate the release. The final preview - ‘Ice Cream’ - is out now.
On ‘Ice Cream’ jazzy chords underpin a psychedelic swirl, with vocals delivered akin to Kevin Parker and Mac DeMarco experimenting with every setting on the vocoder.
It’s high concept indie with bittersweet energy flooding the upper-midrange frequencies. The lyrics about Gen-Z treat culture speak to thousands powerlessness in the face of macroeconomic trends and using an ice cream man as a metaphor for trickle down economics is iconic.
On the single - the duo say:
“Take your hands off the keyboard and grab yourself a spoon: Ice Cream is here to soothe your overworked soul with soft-serve synths and sickly-sweet nostalgia, as the lyrics, more British than Mr. Whippy, hit you with waves of longing.”
Josh Super and Jack Market met via a chance encounter at one of the biggest business conferences in the North-West: “if we didn’t capitalise it would simply be bad business”. Subsequently, a new pop-consultancy was registered with the relevant tax authorities - and the start-up began looking for aural investors.
The office-core aesthetic stems from business school first principles - get noticed. Already catching attention around Manchester, they’ve been stopped in the streets on numerous occasions, recognised for their iconic ties and Brit-pop haircuts. Now that’s what I call guerilla marketing.
‘Ice Cream’ by Super Market is out now (April 23) via Heist or Hit; Shopping List follows on May 2nd.
