AUGUST 28 - South London vocal ensemble WOOM release their new EP ‘To Slow You’ via House Anxiety. With the release comes a stylistic, aesthetically affirming video for EP track ‘Welts’. The group have also just announced their first UK headline tour commencing at London’s iconic ICA on September 26th, and then continuing across the country throughout November and December (full routing below).
Latest single ‘Welts’ unfurls in typically atmospheric style, an ascendant guitar part forms the structure of the track, yet the main space is given over to the group's astounding signature 4-part harmonies and vocal interplay. The accompanying video plays with light, movement and emotion in a way that echoes the music - at once preternatural and earthily human.
On the themes and origins of the track - the band say:
“’Welts’ is about crushing, the intensity of intimacy, and the physical responses to it. Visualising the obsessive, overwhelming blush of a crush, the zoomed in experience, textures and intimate close ups of “imagined pleasure”.
We wrote ‘Welts’ in the countryside during the heat of July. It wasn’t long after a hard winter of lockdown so the wild nature surrounding us felt heightened and visceral after being stuck in the city for so long. Gray came home with Welts on their legs after walking through fields of stinging nettles and grass and it led to imprints of scenery being infused into the feeling of the track. One evening, after a day of writing music we watched ‘A portrait of a Lady on Fire’ by Celine Sciamma. The very palpable and well depicted feeling of a crush and desire (that can’t survive) inspired the chorus - “I keep turning around, but you’re facing the ground”.
‘Welts’ wants to sound like a clearing - embracing the friction and bumps of lust and romance with the company of bustling trees and swishing grass - but also taps into the reality of unrequited lust.”
It follows lead single ‘Slow You’ which came with an amazing cinematic video from noted director Billy Howard Price (Jelani Blackman, Martha Skye Murphy, Creeper) and itself followed the stunning opening teaser single, ‘Circe’.
‘To Slow You’ is WOOM’s first collection of all original compositions, building on the cult reputation of their acclaimed 2021 debut EP ‘Into The Rest’, which saw them reimagine a series of tracks from luminary artists such as Frank Ocean, Outkast, and Angel Olsen.
On the process and motive behind delivering the EP as a whole, the band explains:
“Our new EP ‘To Slow You’ is a culmination of many years of love and hard work. The record was entirely self made; written and recorded between trips away in the countryside and completed in our garden studio in London. It reflects the micro and macro of experiences ; from very personal and intimate feelings of connection and isolation, to the wider feelings of life and existence, landing in new places and seeing the world anew whilst processing the weights of what came before. A lot of the sounds and developments came from hours of improvising and looping vocals and melodies, building and listening to each other in a space away from distraction where we could just be together.
For us, making this EP was an experiment in seeing what we were capable of - a way to play with production and push the boundaries of what we had created before - using the voice as an instrument of production with different techniques and effects. As a band with a core passion of the voice and harmony, we are driven by a constant desire to explore and evolve. While our first EP pushed the boundaries of arrangement, this EP takes that a step further, using the computer and production as creative tools to deepen and expand our sound.”
Across the campaign, media support has been resounding - with Stereogum, CRACK, Wonderland leading the praise at press, with a brilliant session on Zakia’s BBC 6 Music Dream Time show amongst a groundswell of support across BBC 6Music, Radio 1 Radio 3 - confirming a really universally strong radio profile across the board.
WOOM stand out as an entirely unique proposition in their conflation of musical styles, their vocal approach and production has however been compared to Warpaint, Mazzy Star and Cat Power. They have built a loyal following through a mix of their viral song re-imaginings and spellbinding onstage performances. Their live schedule has included two consecutive sold-out headline shows at The Southbank Centre, festivals like Glastonbury, Mirrors and Boiler Room Festival and shows with artists like Caroline Polachek, Clarissa Connelly, Laura Misch, The Big Moon and Grouper.
